Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon seasoning salt
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 lbs boneless pork shoulder
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 can Dr. Pepper (not diet)
- barbecue sauce for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 300℉.
- In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, seasoning salt, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, chili powder, ground mustard, onion powder, and black pepper together.
- Cut the pork shoulder into approximately 1 lb pieces, then evenly coat them with the seasoning blend.
- Heat a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, adding the oil. Sear the pork pieces for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown, taking care not to burn the sugar.
- Pour in the Dr. Pepper to deglaze the pot, cover it, and place it in the oven. Bake for 2½ to 3 hours, or until the meat can be easily pulled apart (internally reaching at least 200℉).
- Shred the meat and serve it with the juices or your favorite barbecue sauce.
Notes
Using a non-diet Dr. Pepper enhances the flavor and moisture of the meat.
The pork should be tender and easy to pull apart when correctly cooked.
Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences.
