Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup buttermilk or 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon lemon juice stir together and let it sit for 5 minutes
  • 1 cup water
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup of butter softened
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons Nutella spread
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • ½ cup whipping cream
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350º F.
  2. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9×13 inch pan with cooking spray and lightly dust with flour; set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk, water, oil, sugar, eggs, baking soda, and salt; mix until well combined.
  4. Add flour and cocoa powder; whisk until smooth and lumps are gone.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 25-35 minutes until a light touch springs back in the center. Cool pans on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes, then remove the cakes to cool completely.
  7. For the buttercream, cream together softened butter and Nutella in a large bowl.
  8. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in milk until the desired consistency is achieved. Keep covered if not using immediately.
  9. Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread an additional 2 tablespoons of Nutella on top, then add about ½ cup of buttercream. Top with the second cake layer.
  10. Frost the top and sides with the remaining buttercream, ensuring an even topping and complete coverage of the sides. Chill in the fridge while preparing the chocolate glaze.
  11. For the chocolate glaze, boil whipping cream in a small saucepan. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips without stirring. Let sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth. Cool for 15 minutes before pouring over the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  12. Chill the cake in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature for a smoother batter.
For a richer flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder and Nutella.
Store any leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
